About Us

Michael Ching is a composer of operas and vocal music. He was the Artistic Director of Opera Memphis from 1992-2010. This site carries a variety of Mr. Ching’s art songs and arrangements. The arrangements include spirituals, American folk songs, and Italian songs available via (pdf). This site has Michael's settings of four of the Arie Antiche, including "Per la gloria," "Caro mio ben," "Non posso disperar," and "Se Florindo e fedele," as well as his settings of three of Petrarch's Sonnets. Also available is his popular setting of the spiritual "Hold on" recorded by Clare Gormley for ABC Classics and also by Kenneth Overton. Michael's new opera, ALICE RYLEY had its premiere in October 2015 at the Savannah VOICE Festival. 

His opera for the Janiec Opera of Brevard Music Center, SPEED DATING TONIGHT! (2013) has been a hit, with over nearly fifty productions in the first four seasons. Upcoming productions in 2017-18 include Ouachita Baptist University, Kansas State University, San Jose State University, and Alamo City Opera.

Another opera, BUOSO'S GHOST (ECSchirmer), is a sequel to GIANNI SCHICCHI. BUOSO has been performed many times and will be performed in 2017-18 at SUNY-Potsdam, University of Central Florida, and OperaDelaware. Michael's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, opera a cappella, was premiered in 2011 by Opera Memphis, Playhouse on the Square, Deltacappella and Riva. An original cast recording is available on Albany Records.
